ABOUT David Brewer
Favorite WOD: No specific favorite, but generally like anything with a barbell; squats, cleans, snatch, overhead presses, etc.
Least Favorite WOD: Anything with walls balls or thrusters
Tell us about your sports & fitness background: I mostly played soccer growing up. Then dabbled in a little football in middle school and high school. After that I was mostly a gym rat through college. I eventually got into obstacle course racing and love going to Spartan races, Savage races and Tough Mudders; which I still do today.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD... what was it, and how did it feel? To be better at obstacle course racing I knew I needed a better balance of strength and overall fitness. A lot of the obstacle course prep workout plans are very ‘CrossFit-like’. I’ve always been interested in CrossFit but thought it would be too much for me initially and was worried about getting injured. I wasn’t used to a class-based workout, but eventually I decided to give it a go. I don’t remember my exact first workout, but I’m sure I was dead afterwards.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? The biggest change is just overall resilience. I used to have chronic back pain, but this seems to be much better. I did have some other injuries early on (not all CrossFit related), but I’m far less injury prone than I used to be. My mobility is way better which definitely helps with injury prevention.
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? Once you get used to having a hard workout almost every day, everything else around you just sems a little easier.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFKSQ moments: FLN is always a blast. That transition from always having to scale workouts to occasionally going RX. And that moment a coach comes up to you and says your form is ‘on point’.
Any advice for people just getting started? Don’t think you are not fit enough to start CrossFit. Everything is scalable – 5 years later, I still scale almost every day..
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? Animals of course. Obstacle course racing as mentioned. Home improvement projects. And I used to SCUBA almost every weekend when I lived back in NC. I’m looking to get back into that now that one of my sons is old enough to get certified.
